About Us

Next Step Sports is an athlete development company offering services designed to aid players in their ‘Next Step’ in sports and in life. We aim to provide athletes with the tools necessary to reach their dreams. Both on and off the ice we strive to help shape not only better athletes but better people too.

“…Together the player and I are a team working together to get the most out of their hockey career and life. At the end of the day if I’ve helped a kid improve and enhanced their love of the game then I feel that I’ve done my job.”

– Drake Brown “Browny”

Who is Drake?

Drake Brown “Browny” played minor hockey in Calgary, AB, suiting up for the Calgary Buffaloes organization before spending 3 years on the road playing Jr.A in the BCHL, AJHL, and SJHL. These years playing Junior Hockey greatly influence how Drake coaches his athletes today. It was at this time where he first experienced helping someone take their “Next Step” towards reaching their hockey dreams, giving him more satisfaction than he ever got from playing hockey himself.

He always knew during his playing career that he wanted to be a coach someday, so he decided to get a head start, opting to not pursue University hockey and instead start coaching with the Calgary Buffaloes Minor Hockey organization. It was with the Buffaloes that Drake really started to develop as a coach. His experiences as a player and coach taught Drake the importance of building meaningful relationships with his players to understand what makes them tick so that he could push players to their highest potential on and off the ice.

Coaching U18 hockey for the Buffaloes organization, Drake noticed that great players were not getting the exposure they truly deserved. He took it upon himself to utilize the tools he’d attained and used as a player to help his players gain exposure by sharing with them the Player Advancement Package and teaching them how to separate themselves from the crowd; giving them a tool to showcase their abilities, character, and passion for the game. Drake took his desire to provide players with more opportunities for advancement in their careers even further by teaming up with great hockey minds who shared the same vision. Thus the creation of the Western Elite Hockey Showcase (WEHS), where hundreds of young hockey players and Junior Hockey coaches gather for an event that has helped hundreds of players find a Junior Hockey team to play for.

Along with being a proud member of NSS and WEHS, Drake is also the Defense Coach for the Mount Royal University Men’s Hockey team, where he is close to finishing his degree in Sports Management.

“I cannot fully help a player achieve their goals if I don’t know what makes them tick. My desire to push people to their highest potential extends beyond the rink. I want to see these players be successful happy members of society. I am not so much a coach as I am a teammate. Together the player and I are a team working together to get the most out of their hockey career and life. At the end of the day if I’ve helped a kid improve and enhanced their love of the game then I feel that I’ve done my job.” – Browny
